Troubled Teens and Emotional Intelligence Pt 3 | California Cultural Influence

As it pertains to the troubled teens from California and reference the cultural influences that shape and mold their likes, dislikes, trends, fads, paradigms, habits, and conformity you only need to look to the social media venues and the ultra liberal icons found in the most peculiar places. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Sean Penn, Ashton Kutcher, and Kobe Bryant are nothing compared to the media darlings you find through the Internet social media giants…. Including Facebook, Youtube, and countless of other Internet outlets.  Peers have influence on peers, and so do people who share commonalities, shared values, similar hobbies, and other types of social activities.  Although liberals from California are bold, highly intellectual, out spoken, passionate, and hold strong opinions they are also the most intolerant people you will ever meet.  These ultra progressives tout legalization of marijuana, holding the belief that the government (including law enforcement) has no right to determine personal choices.  Yet, these same people use the governmental system to condemn, mock, oppress, taunt and shutdown (squash the freedom of speech) anyone who disagrees with their point of view.  Its insane!  This type of mindset is effecting young people in ways we have never seen before.

I have noticed that in the past troubled teens from California thought differently than kids from lets say from North Carolina.  For example, the kids from the south used to use formal speech such as, “Yes, sir”, and “No, sir”.  You also heard “please”, “thank you”, and “your welcomed”.  But now teens from all over the country have the same shared mannerisms and attitudes.  Troubled teens from California to North Carolina seem to expect you to meet their needs, cater to their demands, and become displaced and dismounted when you expect them to be cordial, polite, sensitive, and respectful.  Its as if they have absolutely no experience exercising age appropriate manners.  Meaning, troubled teens from California to North Carolina have no restraint when it comes to spewing vile disrespect toward adult authority figures, and they see themselves has having every right to speak to adults in distasteful manners.  Their emotional intelligence seems to be dwindling and non-existent.

The peers surrounding troubled teens have the greatest impact on development of emotional intelligence of any one teen, generally speaking.  The influence the peer culture has upon the individuals of the culture help to determine the attitudes, norms, mores, of the culture.  One begets the other.  More importantly, the media giants through the Internet now have the greatest influence on the overall culture of any youth, including the troubled teens.  We hear in the news all the time about cyber sex, cyber bullying, and the mocking/abuse of homosexuals, heterosexuals, and just about any group including different ethnicities.  Therefore, the greatest impact on Emotional Intelligence (or the lack thereof) that the California troubled teen has upon him or her comes from the Internet.  The Internet, mainly through Social Media, has expediently moved the cultural needle (likes and dislikes, fads, and trends) like no other venue in the history of men.  What might have taken TV 3 years in causing the teenage culture to adopt and to make fashionable a new cliché, or new clothing style, now only takes 3 weeks for the Internet to accomplish.  It’s simply amazing how fast a new trend or fad takes shape and becomes a conformist movement through Social Media.
